Have you ever set up a Google Alert?

Someone once told me they were a good idea, so I set up a handful of them years ago. They’re a simple tool that lets you keep an ear out for specific names or phrases around the internet. When those words appear somewhere online, Google sends you an email.

One of my favorite alerts is for my friend Tiffany Pitts. She’s the author of three delightful science fiction novels, and I want to know if she publishes a new book or wins an award.

The alert hasn’t told me much about my Tiffany Pitts.

It has, however, introduced me to several fascinating namesakes, including Detective Tiffany Pitts of the Major Crimes Unit in York, Pennsylvania. Detective Pitts is apparently always solving cases and making headlines. It sounds like material for Tiffany’s next novel.

Most of my Google Alerts are like that - interesting, but not especially useful.

And then, a couple of weeks ago, I received a Google Alert for me.

I don’t even remember setting one up.

The email said:

Apparently so.

I clicked right away. Needless to say, that was a fun email to receive.
