I got an email from Comcast today with the subject line, “MFA will be required to access Comcast Business My Account starting September 17.”
I read it and thought, Wait. Comcast requires a Master of Fine Arts degree now?
I thought about how annoying it is to figure out how to call Comcast when there’s a problem. Maybe a degree would come in handy… Then I realized they meant multi-factor authentication.
When you think about it, there are actually a lot of things that seem simple until you realize how much there is to know: Cooking. Painting a room. Growing a garden. At first you think, How hard could it be? And next thing you know, you're 27 minutes into a YouTube tutorial about paint rollers, and you haven’t even thought about paint finishes yet.
Portraits are no exception.
You might think the hard part is taking the photographs. And yes, there’s a lot to know about that. But once we have the images, there are still a surprising number of decisions to make if you want them to become art in your home.
Which room should they hang in?
What size should they be?
Should you choose canvas? fine art paper? photo paper?
What’s better - one large piece or a group of smaller ones?
What frame complements both the photo and the room itself?
Do you want a mat with the frame? Glass? Acrylic?
And perhaps most importantly: Will all of these choices actually look good together on the wall?
You shouldn't need a Master of Fine Arts degree to answer those questions.
