As you know, our studio is across the street from a gas station, so we’re always watching people fill up, cut through the lot to avoid the stoplight on 143rd and Greenwood, and wondering what the price jump will be the next time they update the sign out front. Having lived through the Y2K crisis, I’m genuinely concerned about a four-digit gas price apocalypse that modern signage cannot accommodate.
At the risk of sounding like one of “the olds”, I remember back when gas was $0.79/gallon, and I’d roll out in my mom’s 1989 Oldsmobile Cutlass Cierra on the weekends. $5 was enough to top off the tank after cruising between every 7-Eleven and White Castle on the North side of Chicago.
